Classroom Policies

Students should come to school each day prepared for learning, thinking, and building character. Fifth grade is a year of increased responsibilities, grading and benchmark testing in all subject areas, and SOL tests. Fifth grade is just as rigorous as fourth grade. Please be patient as your child falls back into familiar routines and picks up new routines.

Snack
We will have a small snack each morning. Healthy items only, please. Examples – fruit, vegetables, yogurt, pretzels, crackers, nuts, cheese, etc. Water only in the classroom, please. Snacks are a brain boost!

Homework
The purpose of homework is to review and practice skills learned in class, develop good study habits and attitudes, assist students in working independently, encourage responsibility, and establish a relationship between family, educators, and students.
Students will keep track of homework assignments in their agenda, which will come home each day with their homework folders. Behavior communication will be sent home in this folder as needed.
Time needed to complete daily assignments: 30-45 minutes written/mathematical work, 20 minutes leisure reading. Additional time may be needed for long term projects or occasional writing assignments.

Tests & Quizzes
Assessments will accompany each unit of study. Quiz dates will be announced 2-3 days in advance and test dates will be announced one week in advance. For science or social studies, a study guide will come home when the test date is announced. Notes, classwork, and homework should be used to prepare for both quizzes and tests. Assessment formats will vary and will include multiple choice, short answer, draw and label, fill in the blank, matching, and/or demonstration of an idea/concept/skill.

Absences
When a student is unable to make it to school, I will collect materials throughout the day and leave them on his/her desk. At your request, I will send work home with a sibling or neighbor. Upon return to school, I will conference with the student about what is expected with missed work. In general, I expect that students will make up their work within the number of days they were absent. For example, 3 days absent = 3 days to make up assignments.

Thursday Folders
Completed and graded assignments will come home each week on Thursday, along with school and grade level communications and field trip information. I encourage you to review the papers with your child, noting their strengths as well as making goals for improvement. Please sign and return any paper with a grade of a D or an F. Students are responsible for turning in their folders and enclosed documents each Friday.
